The answer is a group disability plan. Short-term coverage can start paying on the first day of an injury or the 8th day of an illness and continue for 13 or 26 weeks. Long-term group disability can start after the short-term coverage expires and continue up to age 65. It is all about having a plan in case the unexpected occurs.
