You’re ready for spring, but are you ready for tornado season?
Spring is approaching, (also known in Michigan as “Tornado Season”) bringing with it the hopes of warm weather and an ever-increasing anticipation of the months ahead. After a long winter, you’re looking forward to sunshine, green grass, longer days, and the coming of summertime. But have you taken the time to prepare for the not-so-exciting, inevitable dangers of spring, such as thunderstorms and tornadoes? If not, now is the time to start planning.
Consider your current insurance coverage.
Is your home insured? Do you invest in renter’s insurance? Is it time to update or begin your life insurance plan?
So far, 2017 has seen the most active beginning to a year in almost a decade. More than 300 tornadoes have occurred in the year to date, which is almost three times that of an average year. Top wind speeds have reached 180 mph, causing a 50-mile path of damage (Dolce). Too often we take a “it will never happen to me” approach with regards to insurance, but the reality is that tornado season is approaching in Michigan, and it is better to be prepared than to look back and wish we had been.
Home and renter’s insurance are obviously critical with regards to tornado damage. Should your home become the unfortunate victim of a tornado touchdown, it is important that you have the coverage in place to rebuild and replace your possessions. Check the declarations page of your insurance policy to ensure you are covered for wind damage and to find out if you should set money aside to cover a deductible. With the heavy rains that accompany tornadoes and other major storms, you may also want to check your flood insurance policy or consider investing in one. No one wants to consider the possibility of losing their home, but you will sleep more comfortably knowing you are insured against the unknown.
Life insurance is another consideration when preparing for a possible tornado. It’s not a pleasant thought, but the fact is that tornadoes can be deadly. 2017 has already seen two dozen deaths at the hand of tornadoes, and the danger should not go overlooked (Dolce). With a life insurance policy in place, you can be assured that should the unfortunate happen, your loved ones will be compensated.
